Veronica Urquilla, MSW
Veronica is the Manager of Education and Outreach for the STD Bureau of the DC Department of Health’s HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD and TB Administration. In this role she provides technical assistance, training and community building around sexual health with a particular focus on youth ages 12-24 and women. She is the co-author of the DC Youth Sexual Health Plan and provides vision and direction for a dynamic team that implements a number of sexual health initiatives for youth and young adults in DC including school based STD screening, low barrier sexual health options for youth, condom access programs in community and schools, the promotion of sex positive dialogue between youth and adults through the “Sex Is” campaign, the PrEP for Her project, and the Power of the P, a celebration of power, pleasure, prevention and play. Veronica has over 20 years working with youth and youth providers in community, education and government settings. She believes having honest and sometimes uncomfortable conversations are required to initiate change and build progress and has “nothing about us without us” philosophy in building youth programs. Veronica loves talking about sex and learned about orgasm at about age 7 when reading her mom’ Cosmo magazine. She holds a master’s degree in Social Work from Boston University and is a licensed social worker in Washington D.C. When she is not working she is raising a joyful five year old boy.
