Jen Deerinwater is a classically trained vocalist vagabond with a love for books and antique maps. Jen received her BA in Gender Studies and Political Science from the University of Southern California, MS in Communications Management from Simmons College, and a Graduate Certificate in Women in Politics and Public Police from the University of Massachusetts-Boston. She is Bisexual, Two Spirit, multiply-Disabled, and is mixed race Tsalagi-a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.
Jen managed electoral and issue based campaigns for progressive candidates and causes for a decade before changing her path. She now uses her gift for words and research as a journalist to bring attention to her communities’ historical and present challenges. Jen has been published and featured in publications such as Bitch, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, The Establishment, Rewire, and In These Times to name a few. Jen is the Executive Director and founder of Crushing Colonialism, an Indigenous media collective. She is also an educator, public speaker, and community organizing and was a principle organizer for the No Justice No Pride Wells Fargo blockade at the Capital Pride Parade in her chosen home of Washington D.C.
